Three-month Assam ban on NOCs for interfaith land sale

Guwahati: The Assam government has suspended granting of no-objection certificates for sale of land where the buyer and purchaser are from different religions to prevent conflict on communal lines in the run up to the Lok Sabha election.

The state revenue and disaster management (registration) department, in its March 7 order, said intelligence inputs have pointed out several attempts to transfer land by fraudulent means in some places of the state where land belonging to some religious communities was forcibly being transferred to some other religious communities.

The government order underlined that “attempts are being made on the part of vested interests to create conflict on communal lines, particularly in the run up to the ensuing elections to the House of Parliament Constituencies.”

The suspension on granting NOCs will be for three months, effective from March 7. But if the district commissioner is of the view that “granting of such NOC is absolutely necessary for attending circumstances and will not lead to any breach of law and order”, it may be issued with prior concurrence of state Inspector General of Registration.
