Ahmedabad: Fourth seed Chitrax Bhatt of Ahmedabad halted 14th seed Pratham Madlani’s giant-killing spree by vanquishing him in the men’s final of the 1st Gujarat State Ranking Table Tennis Tournament being held at the SAG Sports Complex, Sidsar in Bhavnagar.
Chitrax thumped the paddler from Baroda 4-0 (11-6, 11-9, 11-3, 19-17).
Second seed Soham Bhattacharya of Ahmedabad registered a hard-fought 3-2 victory (8-11, 11-4, 9-11, 14-12, 11-6) over the top seed Akshit Salva to finish third.
Unseeded Krittwika Sinha Roy of Surat clinched the women’s title with a 4-2 win (11-6, 9-11, 13-11, 11-6, 5-11, 11-8) over 10th seed Filzah Kadri.
Third seed Oishiki Joardar of Ahmedabad eased past eighth seed Arnee Parmar of Surat 3-0 (11-6, 15-13, 12-10) to take the third position.
Spartans win against Strikers by solitary goal: Vadodara Warriors and Ahmedabad Avengers scored eight goals between them with the former emerging winner 5-3 in a Gujarat Super League (GSL) match on Sunday. After Akshay Mall put Avengers ahead, Manvir Singh equalized for Warriors. Tagru James scored in the 45th minute for the Warriors before Singh again found the back of the net in the additional time of the first half.
Mall replied immediately in the added time to reduce the lead. James then scored again in the 75th minute to restore Warriors’ two-goal cushion, which Singh again trimmed to one in the 79th minute. Tagru put the result beyond doubt by scoring in the first added minute of the regulation time to seal a famous win for Warriors, who had lost their last match to Spartans 0-1.
Meanwhile, Zidan Momin scored in the 64th minute to help Saurashtra Spartans register a narrow 1-0 win over Surat Strikers in another match.
