Bengaluru: Tati Nungu, or ice apple, are drawing Bengalureans in droves this hot summer. From Banashankari to Malleswaram, streets are abuzz with vendors selling these refreshing translucent, jelly-like palmyra fruits.
Though each fruit, comprising two or three jelly-like pieces, priced around Rs 100, citizens are relishing it with no complaints.
Srinivas Madeyan, a vendor in Banashankari said, “The demand has increased, compared to last year.
People buy in bulk and store in fridge as it has a cooling effect. I am making a profit of minimum Rs 1,000 every day.”
Karthik, a vendor from Jayanagar, said production of ice apples this year is low, leading to skyrocketing prices. “In hot afternoons, people like to stand here and relish nungu like a refreshment or snack.”
Customers prefer to buy from carts despite it being available online. Krishna Arjun, 26, a resident of Jayanagar, said, “At cart, I can pick and choose. Also, it gives you the feel of freshness. Chances of receiving spoilt pieces are high on online orders.”
Dr S V Hittalmani, additional director (retd), horticulture department said, “Since Karnataka doesn’t produce tati nungu, we depend on Tamil Nadu. Ideally, the area of cultivation should increase as demand increases. As the produce isn’t meeting the demand, it is sold at premium rate.”
