Noyyal riverbed turns into dumping site
Coimbatore: The Noyyal riverbed at Ravathur now resembles a dump yard, posing environmental and health hazards to Irugur town panchayat and its people. Garbage is also set on fire on the riverbed, causing air and water pollution.
A resident of Ravathur said garbage was being dumped on the Noyyal riverbed for more than two years.
“Commercial establishments are to be blamed for the scenario.
The panchayat had warned against dumping waste here and put up boards to this effect, but to no avail,” he said.
“The most affected stretch is Ravathur-Sulur road, where waste is being dumped under the cover of darkness,” he added.
Tracing the source of garbage to Sulur and Jaisree Nagar, he said, “With inadequate solid waste management infrastructure, household waste from Jaisree Nagar is dumped on the riverbed.”
When contacted, the assistant director of town panchayat said they would look into the issue and take appropriate action soon.
