Dehradun: The Uniform Civil Code (UCC), Ram Mandir, CAA, and PM Narendra Modi have taken centre stage in the BJP’s campaign for the elections, slated for a single phase in
Uttarakhand on April 19.
From PM Modi to home minister Amit Shah, every senior BJP leader who visited Uttarakhand for campaigning concentrated mainly on these topics, often overshadowing local issues like migration, unemployment, and infrastructure.
During his April 2 rally in Rudrapur, PM Modi emphasised the significance of the CAA in his critique of the Congress party.
Subsequently, at the Kotdwar rally on April 16, home minister Shah underscored PM’s commitment to implementing the UCC nationwide, citing Uttarakhand’s example. Additionally, prominent figures including PM Modi, Yogi Adityanath, and JP Nadda all spoke about the Ram Mandir and criticised Congress for their “failure” in the past to build the temple at Ayodhya.
As part of their strategy, BJP leaders targeted the Gandhi family, particularly Rahul Gandhi, accusing them of “promoting dynasty politics and exerting remote control over previous Congress-led govs at the centre”.
In contrast, Congress attempted to confront the BJP on issues ranging from migration to corruption. However, with few star campaigners aside from Priyanka Vadra, who addressed two rallies, Congress has struggled to mount a sustained attack on the incumbent govt.
Political analyst SMA Kazmi said that the Congress party’s campaign was “generally lacklustre and failed to resonate with the electorate”, except to some extent in Pauri Garhwal. In contrast, the BJP’s campaign pitch centred on Hindutva and nationalism. “In Congress, the candidates were fighting alone with no organisational support, compared to BJP’s well-oiled machinery working round the clock in all five seats,” he further said.
