NEW DELHI: In a breakthrough in Haryana Indian National Lok Dal chief Nafe Singh Rathee's murder case, a joint team of Delhi and Haryana Police has apprehended two shooters from a resort in Goa. They are henchmen of UK-based gangster Kapil Sangwan and his brother, Jyoti Baba. The two prime suspects, Nakul and Atul, are still absconding.
The arrested accused were identified as Saurabh and Ashish.
Sangwan allegedly gave them a task to eliminate the politician. Rathee, who was MLA of Bahadurgarh from 1996 to 2005, was in the front seat of his car when the assailants fired from another car at Barahi Gate Road on Feb 25. He was declared dead on arrival at a nearby hospital. He took bullets in the neck, waist and thigh, doctors at the hospital said.
Sources said that the accused were following the INLD leader three days before shooting him dead. "It seems that someone was giving information about the movements of Rathee to the shooters," they added.
"We suspect that one of the arrested shooters came into contact with Nakul and Atul in jail, and a plan was then hatched," sources further said.
After the murder, they disposed of the weapons and car in Rohtak and fled to Goa. "The joint team tracked down the accused through technical surveillance and arrested him in Goa. The Delhi Police's team was led by ACP Sanjay Dutt," sources said.
TOI had recently reported that a day after gangster Baba was questioned by police in the jail, his brother Sangwan claimed the responsibility for the killing. In a social media post, Sangwan claimed that the politician was a close accomplice of jailed gangster Manjeet Mahal, a rival of Sangwan. "He backed Mahal in the murder of my brother-in-law and my friends," he claimed in the post.
Sources said that several police teams on Feb 26 had questioned Baba in connection with the killing. "He was grilled for several hours, along with another gangster Sandeep alias Kala Jathedi, inside Tihar Jail," sources said.
Baba was arrested from Gujarat in 2020 by a Delhi Police team. At the age of 19, he had committed another murder in Bahadurgarh. He was later arrested, put on trial and sentenced to life. After his conviction, his younger brother, Sangwan, took over the gang.
