Guwahati: Sixty-one candidates are in the fray for Assam’s five Lok Sabha constituencies that will go to the polls in the second phase on April 26.
An Independent candidate from Diphu (ST) constituency withdrew his nomination on Monday.
The five constituencies are Karimganj, Silchar (SC), Diphu (ST), Nagaon, and Darrang-Udalguri, covering central Assam and Barak valley regions.
Among the candidates for Diphu are Joyram Engleng of Congress, Jotson Bey of Autonomous State Demand Committee (ASDC) and BJP’s Amarsing Tisso. The top contenders in Nagaon are sitting Congress MP Prodyut Bordoloi, BJP’s Suresh Bora and AIUDF's Aminul Islam.
In Darrang-Udalguri, there are 11 candidates in the fray, including sitting BJP MP Dilip Saikia, Congress’s Madhab Rajbongshi and Bodo People’s Front’s (BPF) Durga Das Boro.
In Karimganj, sitting BJP MP Kripanath Malla is contesting against Hafez Rashid Choudhury of the Congress and AIUDF’s Sahibul Alam Choudhury.
In Silchar, the frontrunners are Assam minister Parimal Suklabaidya of the BJP, Surya Kanta Sarkar of the Congress and Radheyshyam Biswa of the Trinamool Congress.
The first phase of polls on April 19 will be held in Kaziranga, Jorhat, Dibrugarh, Sonitpur and Lakhimpur constituencies.
