Dibrugarh civic body attains municipal corporation status

The Dibrugarh Municipal Board in Assam has achieved the status of a municipal corporation, with Saikat Patra appointed as the first mayor. The elevation will result in infrastructural investments and higher funds allocation. DIBRUGARH: The Dibrugarh Municipal Board (DMB), established in 1873, has finally attained the status of a municipal corporation, making it the second urban body in Assam to achieve this milestone after Guwahati.
The announcement was made by minister for housing, urban affairs, and irrigation Ashok Singhal at the Dibrugarh civic body office on Wednesday evening, ushering in a wave of celebration and excitement among the residents of the town.

The incumbent Dibrugarh Municipal Board chairperson, Saikat Patra, was appointed as the first mayor of Dibrugarh following the announcement. The Dibrugarh Municipal Board, established on July 16, 1873, is one of the oldest municipal bodies in Assam, with FC Henrike serving as its first chairman.
In his announcement, minister Singhal said, “The elevation to municipal corporation status signifies the growth and progress of Dibrugarh as a major urban centre in Assam. The upgrade will also result in higher allocations of funds, enabling the city to make substantial investments in infrastructure and public services.”
With 22 wards under it, the Dibrugarh Municipal Corporation covers an area of 15.5 square km. As many as 21 wards are being represented by the BJP and one by the Congress.

Nagpur became a municipal corporation on March 2, 1951. The City of Nagpur Corporation Act was inspired by Kolkata, Chennai, Mumbai, and Lahore. NMC was founded by merging two municipal councils. The first mayor was Barrister Sheshrao Wankhede. Services like piped water, streetlights, waste collection, and fire services improved.
