Dibrugarh: Congress candidate Gaurav Gogoi, son of former
Assam CM Tarun Gogoi, kicked off his campaign for the Jorhat Lok Sabha seat in Majuli on Tuesday.
The 41-year-old Congress leader began his campaign trail by crossing the Brahmaputra in a ferry accompanied by his supporters. Upon reaching Majuli, Gogoi hopped onto an open jeep, followed by his supporters on motorcycles, as they made their way around the picturesque river island, engaging with the locals and seeking their support in the election.
Gogoi also took the time to visit a couple of ‘satras’ — Vaishnavite monasteries that are integral to the cultural fabric of Assam.
Majuli holds a special place in Assam as the seat of Vaishnavite culture. He sought blessings from the ‘satradhikars’ (spiritual leaders) and sought their blessings in his quest to emerge victorious in the coming elections.
“Majuli holds a special place in my heart and I am committed to working tirelessly for the development and welfare of the people. My journey in politics has been guided by the values instilled in me by my father, Tarun Gogoi. I stand here today, humbled by the opportunity to serve the people of Assam and champion their causes,” Gaurav said amid his campaign.
Gaurav, who currently serves as the deputy leader of the Congress in the Lok Sabha, is up against incumbent BJP MP Topon Kumar Gogoi for the Jorhat Lok Sabha seat. Topon Kumar Gogoi, the current BJP MP, is looking for a second consecutive win in the Jorhat seat. The competition between the two candidates is expected to be fierce as they campaign to win the support of the voters in the constituency.
