Oppn piggybacking on Cong will be pulled down: Sonowal
Dibrugarh: Union minister for ports, shipping and waterways and Ayush, Sarbananda Sonowal, on Thursday came down heavily on the Congress while addressing multiple election rallies in Margherita area of Tinsukia district.
The 61-year-old Sonowal, who is the saffron party candidate from Dibrugarh Lok Sabha, seat addressed huge gatherings at the North Margherita Rangamancha, Nagapathar Rangamancha, Udaipur Rangamancha and Ledo railway theatre.
Sonowal also joined party supporters in a 5-km march from ward 10 to ward 1 in Margherita town.
Addressing a gathering at North Margherita Rangamancha, Sonowal said, “The Congress is synonymous with the Gandhi family and it hasn’t transcended beyond that. The Congress’s reputation in India revolves around corruption, nepotism and divisive politics. The people of Assam have endured unrest, rampant corruption and discontent during the Congress era. The injustices inflicted upon the Assamese people by the Congress remain unforgettable. Who will hold accountable those who seek refuge behind the Congress for the security of the people? I entrust everything to the public. I am confident that those who want to piggyback on Congress will fall flat in the court of people’s will, as people will pull them down.”
“The people of Assam made me an MLA from Moran, elected me as an MP from Dibrugarh and Lakhimpur. With your blessings, I’ve served as chief minister of Assam once and as a Union minister twice. However, I can confidently affirm that regardless of my positions, I’ve never wavered in upholding my national conscience. I urged the central government to elevate Sivasagar district into a premier heritage site. Prime Minister Narendra Modi wholeheartedly supported the initiative. Additionally, we’ve initiated a project in the Charaideo hills to honour the legacies of 42 Ahom deities,” he added.
Criticising Congress for their inaction to recognise the contribution of legendary artist Bhupen Hazarika, Sonowal said, “Repeated appeals were made to the Congress govt to confer the Bharat Ratna on the globally acclaimed artist Dr Bhupen Hazarika. However, due to a lack of goodwill, these requests went unheeded. Despite Dr Manmohan Singh serving as Assam’s representative for 23 years, he remained conspicuously silent on pressing issues affecting the state. To those who have voiced genuine concerns about my actions, I want to highlight the accomplishments achieved during my tenure, including the completion of projects like the Bogibeel bridge, Dhola-Sadiya bridge, the second bridge at Saraighat, and the gas cracker project. Special funds were allocated to revive the Namrup fertilizer plant with the setting up of two nano fertiliser plants.”
