Guwahati: Polling in the first phase of Lok Sabha election on Friday in the 14 seats of seven northeastern states ended on a largely peaceful note, barring several incidents of firing by unidentified men that left an elderly person wounded and booth capture attempts that prompted angry voters to vandalise polling stations in
Manipur which recorded a turnout of over 70%.
Even as a voter turnout of over 81% was recorded in Tripura West constituency — the highest among the 102 Lok Sabha constituencies across 21 states and UTs that went to the polls on Friday, not a single voter among over the four lakh strong electorate in 20 assembly segments in Nagaland turned up to cast their votes in protest against the Centre not granting them a separate territory, which resulted in a lower voter turnout of just above 56%. Similarly, polling was boycotted in Manipur’s Kangpokpi hill district in protest against the ongoing conflict in the state.
