Hubballi: The Hubballi-Dharwad Municipal Corporation (HDMC) has taken a significant stride towards maintaining cleanliness in the twin cities by deploying two mechanised sweepers.
These sweepers, procured for Rs 2.9 crore from Pune, are now operational on the main road of Keshwapur in Hubballi and its vicinity. As part of the National Clean Air Scheme Programme (NCAP) phase one, these sweepers are equipped to effectively clean the city streets under both wet and dry weather conditions, ensuring a dust-free environment year-round.
The initiative is expected to enhance cleanliness and air quality in Hubballi-Dharwad twin cities.
According to the source, earlier, a machine was vacuuming the dust in the city, but it worked only for five to six years. Now, advanced sweepers have been introduced in the twin cities. Already, the mechanised sweepers have been being used in the metro cities.
HDMC executive engineer Vijaykumar said HDMC started to use the sweepers five days back. “The sweepers are covering the main roads such as Siddappa Kambli Road, CBT Road and Ambedkar Circle. Soon all main roads will be cleaned using the mechanised sweepers.”
He said: “The mechanised sweeper machines are brought from Pune-based Challenger Company on a three-year contract. The same company have given training to the drivers hired on an outsourcing basis for these vehicles. In the first phase, all major roads will be cleaned. The machines can clean 40km per day. It will also absorb particles from 2.5mm to 10mm.”
