HYDERABAD: Telangana remained at heatwave levels for the second day in a row with Nidamanoor in Nalgonda district recording 44.5° Celsius on Sunday. According to data from Telangana State Development Planning Society (TSDPS), Ananthagiri in Suryapet also saw mercury at 44.5 degrees, followed by Nellakondapalle in Khammam (44.4 degrees).
As per India Meteorological Department (IMD), Khammam is presently under heatwave owing to nearly 6 degree excess heat being recorded against normal.
In a similar pattern, weather in Hyderabad was no better with Safilguda in Malkajgiri recording 41.5° Celsius. On Saturday, Suryapet had recorded the season’s highest temperature at 44.5° Celsius in Telangana, with two districts Khammam and Ramagundam being declared under heatwave by IMD.
Latest predictions by IMD suggests the situation may continue on Monday, after which relief is in sight with strong thunder-showers expected. Districts of Gadwal and Wanaparthy are likely to see similar high temperatures above 41° Celsius, according to IMD. There is likely respite from Ugadi onwards, with heatwave conditions being downgraded to humid and hot conditions.
“Thunderstorm accompanied with lightning and gusty winds (40-50 kmph) are very likely to occur at isolated places in Adilabad, Komaram Bheem Asifabad, Mancherial, Nirmal, Nizamabad, Jagtial, Karimnagar, Peddapally, Jayashankar Bhupalapally, Mulugu, Medak and Kamareddy. Other districts will experience hot and humid conditions,” noted IMD. Meanwhile, the data from TSDPS suggests that the last time Telangana and Hyderabad experienced such a heatwave was in 2016 when temperatures soared to 48° Celsius in various districts.
However, officials note this is unlikely to be breached this year as an extended phase of thundershowers with high temperatures will continue in the state. The highest ever temperature recorded in Telangana was 48.8° Celsius on April 26, 2016 in Mancherial.
