HYDERABAD: Despite facing cash shortage, Telangana has emerged successful in preventing leakages, with the state rising to fifth place in eWay bill (EWB) generation and fourth in EWB verification.
Commercial taxes department’s serious monitoring and vigilance in generation of EWB has resulted in a significant climb from 17th place in Feb 2023 to fifth rank, officials claimed.

The number of EWBs generated in Feb 2023 climbed to 39,67,091 from 32,50,871 in Feb 2022, resulting in a difference of 7,16,220 EWBs generated. An eWay bill is a permit required for inter-state and intra-state transportation of products valued at more than 50,000. It comprises information about the products, consignor, recipient, and transporter. It can be generated online via Goods and Services Tax Network (GSTN). The eWay bills for inter-state supplies started on April 1, 2018, and for intra-state supplies on April 25, 2018, in some states, including Telangana.

Top ranking states in EWB generation include Maharashtra, Gujarat and Karnataka. Official sources said ever since the commercial taxes department’s vigil has increased, it has simultaneously led to increased verification of bills pushing the state to fourth rank after Haryana, Punjab and Karnataka.
“In the last few years, there was no verification of vehicles. We were nowhere in the picture. But in the last few months, we detained 169 vehicles without EWBs,” an official said. Official sources said the GST filing compliance (both SGST and CGST) by every 20th of the month has also improved.
There are about five lakh dealers in Telangana. Earlier, only 68% traders used to file GST returns by 20th of the month, but this time deadline compliance has increased to 78%, said officials.
