2 Bengal masters’ paintings fetch record price at e-auction
Kolkata: Two master painters from Bengal — Sailoz Mookherjea and JP Gangooly — have sold at record prices at an online auction. The works were up for bidding at the Masters Legacy auction that was held on April 27-28.
According to Siddanth Shetty of AstaGuru Auction House, “These numbers are also testament to the significance that Bengal artists continue to hold in the overarching history of Indian art despite the ever-changing landscape of art auction market.”
Mookherjea’s oil on canvas was acquired at Rs 1.3 crore.
Gangooly’s ‘Untitled (Sunrise)’ oil on canvas dated 1930 was acquired for Rs 2.6 crore.
Three works by Bikash Bhattacharjee were also offered at the auction. All of them sold over their estimate prices. Bhattacharjee’s ‘She & The Morning’, an oil on canvas executed in 1974, sold for Rs 1.5 crore. Another oil on canvas executed in 1990 titled ‘Morning’ was sold for Rs 82 lakh while ‘She’ executed using oil and mixed media on board in 1968 was acquired for Rs 1 crore.
