GHATAL: BJP was planning to trigger violence in Ghatal by killing a worker and blame Trinamool for it, claimed TMC's Ghatal candidate Dev on Wednesday.
"I have inputs that BJP is trying to create violence here. They will hatch a conspiracy, kill one of their party workers and blame TMC. I apprehend that this might happen before polling day," Dev said. Ghatal is going to polls on May 25.
Dev claimed that the trouble might start from Keshpur.
"They will create tension and try to reap dividends during the polls. BJP has realized that the ground beneath their feet is sinking. They have scripted a plot and might try to enact something gruesome after May 10," he added.
Dev said he wanted to ensure safety of people irrespective of their political affiliation. "We have tried to keep Bengal peaceful, but BJP has some other plans for the state. I hope good sense prevails over everyone taking part in the polls," he added.
BJP's Ghatal candidate Hiraan Chattopadhyay alleged that Dev's statement was nothing but a figment of imagination and Trinamool had been spreading violence across the state. "Even if BJP hatched a conspiracy, how could he be privy to that? It is quite evident that he has a plan in mind and we should be worried now. Our workers are feeling threatened after Dev's statement," Chattopadhyay said.
He added that BJP was taking legal opinion on the issue and would notify the Election Commission about the statement. "It is shameful that an MP is saying such things in public," he added.
Dev is contesting in Ghatal for his third term.
