Cops: No community procession attacked

Kolkata: Bengal Police on Tuesday took to social media to deny allegations that a community procession was vandalized at Sarisha on Monday evening.
The denial followed claims by BJP social media in-charge Amit Malviya on ‘X’ that a certain group of people was forced “to flee their homes in village Bagakhali, under Bishnupur block of Diamond Harbour, after…violent attacks against them.”
Bengal Police have warned that “those trying to deliberately ignite communal passions will be sternly dealt with as per law.”
Chief minister Mamata Banerjee had recently asked citizens to remain vigilant against attempts to incite communal tension in the run-up to Ram Navami and Eid.
“Wilful misinformation is being spread from certain quarters on social media about an incident last night in Sarisha. The fact of the matter is two groups clashed with each other over exchange of filthy language. Prompt police intervention under the direct supervision of senior officers diffused the tension. Three persons have been arrested. No religious procession was vandalized. Presently, the situation is peaceful,” said an officer.
The Bengal BJP’s handle on ‘X’ had posted a video and wrote: “...criminal elements are growing in Bengal. Police arrested 11 BJP members! This is a totally planned communal attack, with polls as agenda.”
