Madurai: Taking into account that there are only two veterinarians employed by the Madurai corporation to sterilize stray dogs, Madras high court has asked the state to consider increasing their numbers.
The court was hearing a public interest litigation filed by R Balaji in 2018 complaining about a stray dog menace in the Madurai corporation limits.
During the course of hearing, the counsel appearing for the civic body submitted that there are two veterinarians in the corporation to sterilize stray dogs.
The first bench of Chief Justice Sanjay Vijaykumar Gangapurwala and Justice P D Audikesavalu observed that the state and corporation could consider increasing the number of veterinarians, so that steps could be taken to control the stray dog population. The bench posted the case for further hearing on June 12 by when the state was asked to submit a response. TNN
