TOI’s reality check at Baba Mehar Nagar, Shilpakar Nagar, Shakti Mata Nagar, Siddheshwari Nagar and their adjoining areas revealed that police teams have hardly patrolled these localities for months now.
According to a local resident of Baba Mehar Nagar, burglars are having a free run in their neighbourhood. “Recently, the residence of an advocate was burgled. Thefts and burglaries are common things here,” said a senior citizen residing near the residence of Nilesh Tandulkar whose house was burgled on May 5 in broad daylight. Two burglars, who had entered the residence of Tandulkar, were nabbed by the citizens and handed over to the cops.

The house of Ashish Sonwane, Tandulkar’s neighbour, was burgled around one-and-half years ago. The burglars had decamped with cash ₹10 lakh. “Our area hardly sees patrolling by police,” said Sonwane.
Another resident said that he has never seen any police vehicles or bike-borne constables in their area. “Many prefer not to lodge burglary complaints fearing legal complexities. They think it’s a waste of time as the cases are hardly ever solved,” he said.
