PATNA: In an incident of medical negligence, a 28-year-old woman died during a botched-up sterilisation surgery, allegedly conducted by a compounder of a private clinic in Samastipur district in the absence of the doctors on Saturday.
Following the death of Babita Devi, her family members created a ruckus at the clinic, even as the compounder managed to flee from there.
Raids are being conducted to nab him, police said on Sunday.
According to police, Babita, a resident of Ward 14 in Musrigharari town in the district, about 80km away from the capital, was admitted to Anisha Health Care Centre on Patori Road around 9am on Saturday. “At first, the compounder and other staff told the family members that there was no doctor in the clinic. After some time, the compounder convinced the family members that he can perform the surgery and proceeded with the operation,” said Musrigharari station house officer Faizul Ansari.
He added the woman was taken to the operation theatre around 11am after administration of saline water, but after an hour her condition deteriorated. “She was then transferred to another private medical establishment, about 10km away from there, without the consent of her family members. She was declared dead at the other clinic, after which the woman’s body was brought back to the centre,” said Ansari.
After her family members came to know of her death, they started protesting outside the Anisha Health Care, demanding immediate arrest of the clinic’s owner-cum-doctor who was supposed to conduct the surgery and other medical staff, he added.
Ansari further said that a complaint has been registered against the doctor, medical staff and the clinic. An investigation is underway.
