HC pulls up cops for erratic traffic in city
Ranchi: The Jharkhand High Court on Thursday pulled up the traffic police for not being able to maintain smooth flow of traffic on the Mahatma Gandhi Road (Main Road) in the state capital. The court has ordered the traffic SP to file a response in the matter.
A division bench of Justices Rongon Mukhopadhyay and Deepak Roshan were hearing a public interest litigation initiated suo moto on erratic traffic in in the city.
The HC stated that the stretch between Sujata Chowk and Albert Ekka Chowk is always choked and traffic crawls at a snail’s pace.
The court observed that traffic in between Sujata and Albert Ekka Chowk is uncontrolled. Triple riding is done on two-wheelers, while many ride without helmets, the bench said. The HC has sought a report on the number of challans cut for traffic rule violators on Main Road. The court also queried as to which is the place in the city where traffic rules are violated the most. The court has also sought information from Ranchi Traffic SP as to when the vacancies of traffic constables will be filled up for manning traffic on city arteries. The bench also questioned the home department secretary to inform that what steps are being taken to provide speed check instruments and towing trucks to traffic constables.
