Now, abandoned patients set to get free caregivers at Rims
Ranchi: Jharkhand Thalassemia Foundation has signed a pact with the state-run Rajendra Institute of Medical Sciences (Rims) here to provide free-of-cost caregivers/attendants to poor abandoned patients who are admitted to the premier hospital.
The MoU was signed on Saturday and the foundation will provide the service for three years, the Jharkhand Thalassemia Foundation secretary Atul Gera said on Sunday.

On the initiative, Gera said, “Rims being a tertiary centre, a lot of patients were referred from all over the state for treatment. Most of the patients come from the financially weaker sections of society and a few of them are also abandoned by their families because of various socio-economic issues. It is unfortunate but a sad truth that these abandoned patients are unable to get bedside care and face a very painful and challenging time. Hence, there was a need for creating a support system to help these patients get bedside care.”
He said as per the MoU, they will create a support system with three caregivers for the abandoned patients at Rims and they will administer oral medication under the supervision of the treating nurses and act as bedside caregivers in facilitating treatment, investigation, medication inside the hospital for treatment purposes under the supervision of the treating hospital staff. “Our foundation will pay the salaries of the three caregivers through its donors,” Gera said.
Rims superintendent Dr Hiren Birua said on their part, the hospital will provide beds, treatment, investigation, medication, food and all necessary medical requirements to the abandoned patient and create a green corridor to expedite their treatment and discharge.
“This initiative will help abandoned patients get medical treatment in a dignified manner and will also improve their quality of life and create awareness among society to help the needy in the most compassionate gesture,” Gera added.
