TRICHY: Nagappattinam MP M Selvarasu of CPI passed away due to ailments at a private hospital in Chennai early this morning. He was 67.
The four-time MP of CPI from Nagappattinam Lok Sabha constituency was undergoing treatment for renal issues. He is survived by his wife and two daughters.
Selvarasu had a history of renal ailments for some years. Despite the issue, he was actively involved in the public life.A senior party functionary said that he was in full swing in the campaign for Lok Sabha polls 2024. Last week only, he developed health issues and got admitted to the government medical college hospital in Tiruvarur before being shifted to a private hospital in Chennai where he died early this morning.
Selvarasu was elected four times from Nagappattinam Lok Sabha constituency in 1989, 1996, 1998 and 2019. In the recently concluded Lok Sabha elections, CPI Tiruvarur district secretary V Selvaraj,62 has been given ticket to contest in the Nagappattinam constituency.
Born in Kappaludaiyan village near Needamangalam in Tiruvarur district on 16 March 1957, Selvarasu associated himself with the CPI since his young age. He rose through the ranks in the party to become the Nagappattinam district secretary of the party and was appointed to other state level posts.
Sources said that CPI national leader D Raja will pay homage to his mortal remains today at Sithamalli village in Tiruvarur district where his final rites is said to be held on Tuesday.
