PUDUCHERRY: A Johnkumar and his son Richard Johnkumar, who contested on
BJP tickets, were elected to the legislative assembly of the Union territory of Puducherry on Sunday.
Johnkumar, who quit the
Congress ahead of April 6 assembly polls and joined the BJP, was doubly rewarded with party tickets for him and his son Richard Johnkumar.
Contesting in Kamaraj Nagar, the father, a two-time
MLA, had an easy outing beating former Congress minister M O H F Shahjahan by 7,229 votes.
Johnkumar polled 16,687 votes while Shahjahan could manage only 9,458 votes.
Unlike his father, the going was tough for the son, who won the seat by a wafer-thin margin of 496 votes. DMK candidate V Cartigueyane gave a tough fight to Richards. He polled 11,563 votes as against
Richards 11,757 losing the constituency by a thin margin.
