NEW DELHI: The All Assam Students' Union (AASU) and 30 indigenous organisations protested against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA) by burning copies of the law in various parts of Assam, including Guwahati, Barpeta, Lakhimpur, Nalbari, Dibrugarh, and Tezpur.
In addition to the protests, the 16-party United Opposition Forum, Assam (UOFA), announced a state-wide shutdown on Tuesday and planned to carry out other agitational programs in a phased manner.
AASU advisor Samujjal Bhattacharjya stated that the movement against the CAA would continue to be non-violent, peaceful, and democratic.
He also emphasised that the indigenous people of Assam and the Northeast would never accept the CAA. The North East Student Organization (NESO) planned to burn copies of the CAA in all state capitals of the region, while AASU and 30 organizations would hold torchlight processions in Assam and launch a satyagraha from the following day.
With the issuance of the CAA rules, the central government, led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, will grant Indian nationality to persecuted non-Muslim migrants from Bangladesh, Pakistan, and Afghanistan who arrived in India before December 31, 2014. The CAA, which was passed in December 2019 but had not been implemented until now, includes Hindus, Sikhs, Jains, Buddhists, Parsis, and Christians.
