NEW DELHI: Captain Sanju Samson played a brilliant unbeaten innings of 71 runs as
Rajasthan Royals virtually secured their play-off spot with a comprehensive seven-wicket victory over
Lucknow Super Giants on Saturday.
In the evening match in Lucknow, the hosts posted a competitive total of 196-5, thanks to a superb innings of 76 by skipper KL Rahul and his 115-run partnership with Deepak Hooda, who contributed with a half-century (50 runs).
Lucknow encountered early setbacks when New Zealand's left-arm quick Trent Boult dismissed Quinton de Kock for eight, followed by Sandeep Sharma removing Marcus Stoinis without scoring.
Despite the early setbacks, Rahul and Hooda steadied the innings and launched a counterattack. However, their efforts fell short as Rajasthan Royals' Dhruv Jurel (52) and Samson guided the table-toppers to victory with one over to spare, securing their eighth win in nine matches.
Rajasthan also maintained a flawless away record this season, having won all four matches played on the road. Captain Sanju Samson expressed immense joy and satisfaction with his team's exceptional performance.
"We have been doing well. We have been a little lucky as well. We have to stick to the right processes. Mistakes are supposed to happen in T20 cricket, and we reiterate to stick to the process. The results are coming our way, so it is clear that we are doing something right," he said during the post-match presentation.
Samson also praised Jurel's crucial unbeaten innings, highlighting its significance in Rajasthan Royals' victory. He commended Jurel's composure and ability to perform at No. 5, a position widely regarded as one of the toughest roles in T20 cricket.
"Form is temporary and batting at No.5 is the toughest job in T20 cricket. A youngster like him, he has the composure as we have seen in Tests. We believed in him, he has been batting in the nets for one or two hours and we knew it was a matter of time (before he delivered)," Samson added.
