NEW DELHI: It has been four years since the tragic helicopter crash in Calabasas, California, claimed the lives of
NBA legend Kobe Bryant, his daughter Gianna, and seven others. The passage of time has not dulled the impact of this heartbreaking loss, and the world continues to mourn and remember the indelible mark left by Kobe and Gianna.
Kobe Bryant, posthumously inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame, was 41 at the time of his untimely death.
His legacy resonates not only with the Los Angeles Lakers, where he built a storied career, but across the NBA, WNBA, and the global sports community. The Mamba and Mambacita Foundation, founded in their honor, carries forward their commitment to sports, youth, and community.
To commemorate Kobe's enduring influence, the Los Angeles Lakers are set to unveil a bronze statue of the basketball icon at Star Plaza outside Crypto.com Arena on Feb. 8. This tribute aligns with the date, featuring the iconic Nos. 8 and 24, which Bryant wore during his illustrious Lakers career. The statue will join those of other Lakers legends, including Elgin Baylor, Shaquille O’Neal, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Magic Johnson
, Jerry West, and Chick Hearn.
The Kobe Bryant Trophy for All-Star MVP, introduced in 2020, stands as another testament to his impact on the game. Winners of this prestigious award include Kawhi Leonard (2020), Giannis Antetokounmpo (2021), Steph Curry (2022), and Jayson Tatum (2023). Tatum, expressing the significance of the award, remarked, “To be able to ... take home this award of somebody that I idolized, it's a hell of a day.”
In the aftermath of the tragedy, Vanessa Bryant, Kobe's widow, navigated legal battles, securing a $28.85 million settlement from Los Angeles County over the unauthorized sharing of crash photos. Vanessa, at the helm of the Mamba and Mambacita Sports Foundation, continues to make impactful contributions to sports and community initiatives.
In 2022, the WNBA introduced the Kobe and Gigi Bryant Advocacy Award, recognizing advocates for women’s basketball. Chris Paul (2022) and Pau Gasol (2023) received this honor. Gasol, Kobe's former teammate, has been a vocal supporter of women's sports and inclusivity in coaching.
Nike, in collaboration with Vanessa Bryant, sustained the legacy through signature shoe releases, with proceeds from Gianna's shoes donated to the Mamba and Mambacita Sports Foundation. Six college programs, including UConn and Duke, donned Kobe and Gigi sneakers to honor their legacies.
Kobe Bryant's posthumous induction into the Orange County Hall of Fame on Jan. 12 further solidified his place among Southern California luminaries.
