Bigg Boss Kannada OTT fame Sonu Srinivas Gowda has been arrested in Bengaluru for alleged violations related to the adoption of an eight-year-old girl. The arrest follows accusations of adopting the child unlawfully and using her for personal publicity on social media platforms.
Sonu Srinivas Gowda is currently remanded to 14-day judicial custody in Bengaluru Central Prison after her arrest on March 22. Byadarahalli Police, in coordination with Child Welfare Committee (CWC) officials, apprehended Gowda for purportedly circumventing legal adoption procedures and exploiting the child for social media attention.
The arrest stemmed from Sonu's uploading of reels on social media, featuring herself and the adopted girl, claiming she had adopted her. This action sparked a controversy regarding the legality and ethicality of the adoption process, raising concerns about the exploitation of adoption for celebrity status.
Authorities have taken legal action against Sonu for revealing the rescued girl's identity on social media, a violation of the Juvenile Justice Act of 1974. The Child Welfare Committee emphasized the importance of adhering to formal adoption procedures outlined by the Central Adoption Resource Authority (CARA) to protect children's rights and privacy.
The case has prompted investigations into the complexities and legalities of adoption, particularly regarding Sonu's alleged failure to follow established procedures. Concerns were raised about the suitability of Sonu Srinivas Gowda as a guardian, given her unmarried status and potential financial transactions related to the adoption.
Sonu Gowda, according to a senior official from the Byatarayanapura police, claimed ignorance of adoption rules, expressing her intention to help the child receive an education. She stated that she met the child's family while they were working near her residence, and after regular interactions, she convinced them to let her adopt the eight-year-old to support her education. However, relatives of the child refuted allegations of receiving money from Sonu, asserting that she promised to educate and take care of the child without mentioning any publicity intentions. The girl's uncle expressed surprise and dismay at the use of the child for social media content, indicating a lack of awareness regarding Gowda's intentions.
As the investigation unfolds, the child remains in the custody of the Child Welfare Committee. The arrest of Sonu Srinivas Gowda underscores the importance of upholding legal and ethical standards in adoption processes, ensuring the welfare and protection of vulnerable children.
