Sri Lanka kept their Asia Cup title defence alive as they beat Pakistan by two wickets in an edge-of-the-seat thriller on Thursday to book their place in Sunday's final against India.
Electing to bat in the rain-marred contest, Pakistan posted 252-7 in 42 overs following half-centuries by Mohammad Rizwan and Abdullah Shafique. Kusal Mendis kept Sri Lanka's chase on track but it was Charith Asalanka's unbeaten 49 which helped them clinch the last ball thriller.
Chasing a DLS readjusted target of 252 in a rain-truncated 42-overs-a-side match that ended well past midnight, Sri Lanka rode on a superb performance by their middle order batsmen.
Pakistan skipper Babar Azam said that Sri Lanka played better cricket than them as they missed out on the Asia Cup final spot by the barest of margins.
After winning the previous edition of the Asia Cup last year, Sri Lanka has yet again shown why it should not be counted out. Despite the absence of premier bowlers like Wanindu Hasaranga, Lahiru Kumara, Dushmantha Chameera and Dilshan Madushanka, the Lankan Lions once again made it to the final of the Asia Cup and will play India in Colombo on September 17.
The Men in Green have one of the best top-order batters in the world, namely skipper Babar Azam, as well as Imam-ul-Haq and Fakhar Zaman, and a brilliant pace attack of Shaheen Shah Afridi, Naseem Shah and Haris Rauf.
