NEW DELHI: Pope Francis commended Italy on Monday as Jannik Sinner secured a historic victory, becoming the first Italian man in nearly half a century to clinch a Grand Slam singles title. Sinner's triumph at the Australian Open prompted the pope's acknowledgment during an audience with the Real Club de Tenis Barcelona.
During the celebration of the Barcelona club's 125th anniversary, Pope Francis expressed his congratulations to Italy. "Today we have to congratulate the Italians because yesterday they won in Australia, so we congratulate them, too," he stated. Reflecting on the broader significance of sports, he added, "In tennis, as in life, we can’t always win.\
But it’s an enriching challenge if it is played in an educated manner according to the rules. … Sports are not just about competing but also relations. And in the case of tennis, it’s a dialogue that often becomes artistic."
