Uber Cup 2024: China beat Indonesia to claim its 16th title
NEW DELHI: China secured its 16th Uber Cup championship by defeating Indonesia with a score of 3-0 in Chengdu on Sunday. The tournament was held in China for the first time since 2016, and the host nation was heavily favoured to win after losing to South Korea in the previous final two years ago.
Chen Yufei, the Olympic champion, led the singles matches and defeated Gregoria Mariska Tunjung in straight sets, 21-7, 21-16. "I am ready to take on anybody. I am confident and in pretty good form," said Chen, who hadn't dropped a single set throughout the tournament.
In the doubles match, world No. 1 pair Chen Qingchen and Jia Yifan extended China's lead to 2-0 by beating Siti Fadia Silva Ramadhanti and Ribka Sugiarto 21-11, 21-8. Despite losing the first set 21-10 in the second singles match, He Bingjiao fought back to clinch the victory for China with a 21-15, 21-17 win over Indonesian teenager Ester Nurumi Tri.

Chen Qingchen, who has played four Uber Cups with Jia Yifan, acknowledged that this might be their last team event together. "It will probably be our last team event. It might be a sad moment for our fans, but since it is our last dance, please wish us a better life in the future," she said.

The young Indonesian team also made history by reaching the final for the first time since 2008. Tunjung commented, "We reached the final after 16 years. It wasn't easy but we have proven our strength. This tournament is set to make us better prepared for the Olympic Games."

Japan and South Korea were awarded the bronze medals, while the Thomas Cup final was set to take place on Sunday evening.
